Chapter Twenty-Two

The last thing any of them expected was a petrol bomb being hurled through the front window of the newspaper office. But that was how the fire was started, resulting in a full evacuation.

Charlotte made good time from the hotel, arriving at the office ten minutes before the morning meeting began. She even had time to make a useful round of phone calls using her own SIM in Hollie’s phone. Hollie knew she’d got the phone now, so that cat was well and truly out of the bag.

Isla and George were well on top of the guest house. Every time she checked in after another absence, she’d grit her teeth, expecting Isla to say she’d had enough and that she’d have to get on with it on her own. She deserved it; the guest house had become somewhat of an afterthought. It was paying the bills though, so she couldn’t afford for that to happen.

Still, the activity around the Irwins diverted her attention. She and Will needed a serious talk about the future of the Lakes View Guest House. She resolved to check in on Rex Emery and ask him how his compensation claim was progressing. It would be the best outcome for everybody if he bought it back from them and re-started his life.

Isla even had some good news; the window had been fixed first thing. Fortunately, the weather was still, or else they’d have had a gale blowing through the lounge. As it was, the guests saw it all as a novelty, Isla had reassured her.

There was nothing from Will. He hadn’t texted Hollie via her mobile number, nor had he got in touch with Charlotte via hers. That was unusual. Will always told Charlotte what he was up to. That was why she was certain he wasn’t having an affair. He was like his own GPS signal, telling her every detail of his movements, and this current behaviour was completely out of character.

She thought about how the Loose Women on TV might regard her thought processes if she were explaining the story to them. They’d have Will tarred and feathered already; they’d reckon it was a slam-dunk of an affair. But she knew her husband. Hollie Wickes wasn’t even his type of woman. He disliked facial piercings too, though he did his best to accept them, understanding people did it to express themselves. If he was guilty of anything with Hollie Wickes, it would be that he was too naive and helpful and the student might have read it the wrong way, being so young.

For a moment, Charlotte doubted herself. Was she being an idiot? No, she was certain she wasn’t. However, she did want to speak to her husband as soon as possible.

She even had time to check in on Lucia who’d been drinking in Lancaster with Ollie and Willow. She was annoyed with herself for falling asleep in the hotel room. If she’d thought about it, she could have joined the kids for a night out.
